JPSC Forum vs Sylva Chat

Postby Edd » Sun Mar 23, 2014 10:24 pm

What are people thoughts about this?
We will never please all the people all the time, but personally actual JPSC members are my main concerns.
1. Sylva Chat has been around for donkeys years, and is independant of the JPSC and any mfrs. Many seem to forget this and assume it is part of the JPSC.
2. If they were 'merged', which persoanlly I would be against, how would you accomodate those that prefer forums such as this one and those that prefer email lists and abhor forums! Often never the twain shall meet!
3. The JPSC's long term plan is to move this forum onto the JPSC website, did anyone not know there is a JPSC website?
To conclude, and I know I am drifting of topic, the JPSC's electronic presence consists of:-
1. A Website www.jpsc.org.uk
2. This forum www.jpsc-online.co.uk
3. The Proper Job - PDF Magazine

Sylva-Chat, is a googlegroup chat list, as mentioned is independant of the JPSC. As a disclaimer I should state that I also 'own' Sylva chat but I'm not aware of any conflicts of interests! Please tell me if you think there is!

It was a dilution of the Sylva web knowledge although in recent months/years it seems to have died a death (Google Groups). I actually don't think it matters now as both the JPSC forums and the Chat are dead really...I wouldn't be surprised if a section on Locostbuilders is the future.

Edd is entirely right when he says you can't please all the people all the time. In my experience - Keep It Simple is generally the best policy.

I would personally rather see just one group/forum/website/locostbuilders section. Those who want to migrate will, others won't, and new contributors will discover Sylva Cars.

The content will be as varied as it is now, between the various platforms, it will just be in one place, which would hopefully pull in more traffic.

That's my tuppence worth!!

I am not sure what the question is? If its 'do we have a chat list OR a forum' then that question has been done to death before and you will never get a unanimous answer :!:

I use the chat list less often (but still read anything that does come up on it) and find I get quicker answers on forums. I find I tend to ask on locostbuilders first as I get quicker answers then on here though (unless its Jeff....he replies on both here and locostbuilders equally quickly ;) ) :(

As someone who works a lot via email, the last thing I need is more "off topic" email. A forum is far better than an email list as you can elect to partake when you have the time, but dont get "Spammed" by unwanted postings when too busy. I had to leave Cam7 for this reason.

However, I strongly agree that dilution is a big and probably the biggest, issue. If one could pull all the archives into one place (like a subforum within Locostbuilders), this would provide both a single place to communicate, plus all the accumulated postings to search through. But even just coalescing the Sylva chat and JPSC into one seaarchable forum would be a good start.

Incidentally, the JPSC do have a Facebook Page and a Twitter account, I won't publish it yet as neither of them are updated currently, but will add this to the planned announcements/relaunch etc that should happen shortly after Stoneleigh.

As an aside, Beardy, the Sylva Chat List on googlegroups should also be available in a forum version on the Googlegroups website.
I do like the idea of a sublist on Locostbuilders but would rick diluting further.
One plan that will happen is to merge this forum into the JPSC website, essentially should make no difference here but means the JPSC will have one home!
Edd.
PS. It's highly unlikely the Sylva Chat List will merge with the Forum and Vice Versa. Some people love the list, some love the forum and n'er the twain shall meet, c'est la vie etc.

It has been mentioned several times on Locostbuilders that a JP section would be really good and give a 'home' for all the Striker/Fury/Phoenix/etc questions. Some said that some of JP's cars can now sell for £10-£20k (new) and what is Locost about that..... Instead they added an MX5 section that seems to have the odd ball of tumbleweed blowing through it :?

Hi All

'Website is back up and running now....did anyone notice?'

I was just reading Edd's comments (see above) and wondered if anyone else ever visited the website? I'm not sure there is ever anything new on there to attract regular hits. When I first came across it I was delighted to see that there was an actual club for these brilliant cars and then I stumbled across this forum which I visit everyday to check up on the new post etc.

The website doesn't seem to mention the forum or have a link even. Am I missing something? Is there stuff on there that I'm not seeing?

I like the look of both the website and the forum and I know people are busy with their non JPSC lives but the website appears to have been static for quite a while. I do realise that changes are also on the way.

I also have no idea what Sylva Chat is and where to find it.

This is meant as a constructive piece of observation.
Regards Richard

What I find very interesting is that since Edd's question the post rate on the forum has picked up considerably !
