Here we go again, Sylva No3

Postby philfingers » Thu Nov 22, 2012 1:14 pm

Well old habits die hard and the old Sylva thing always tempts, like the ‘just once more’ when the addict is trying to come clean and kick the habit

So this is No 3, 18½ years after I bought my first Striker and 16 months after selling the Phoenix

So it’s a 1997 SVA’d Striker, xflow on 40s with some race cam. Engine spec unknown, but ‘about’ 120bhp at the wheels. Was built by a fella in Kettering, Michael Goode I think it was, possibly to race and maybe he did a few races in it. Nice basic/classic cooking spec. 13” 4 spoke Rev’s on 32 or 48Rs, solid disc front and drums rear, no idea on diff, full screen and hood, 5 speed box, RS2000 alloy bell housing, basic fibreglass shells, without any covering. Some nice touches such as R/J’d long gear lever and Elliot tacho

A very brief assessment for the MOT:- battery, rear indicator lens [it’s cracked- any idea what they were off?- mini?], ignition switch [owner left the keys in Barcelona], front number plate & a mirror or two
It needs a good clean as it’s just dusty really, is mostly tidy tho, a fuel gauge [there isn’t one!- would be more useful than the ammeter that’s fitted!] and a set of air filters wouldn’t go a miss. I’ve not seen it running, last ran 10 months ago

Need to do a safety check over, but don’t think it will need much, has been dry stored and has done 200 miles in 12 years since it’s last MOT, that’s assuming the speedo cable is still there and working. Will add to the thread as I progress with what I find

ok, here are a few images taken the night I picked it up, for some reason no pictures of the whole car
Interestingly it also has a SABTVRO*********** chassis number [VRO most likely meaning Vehicle Registration Office] as discussed here [ viewtopic.php?f=4&t=424 ] Car was built by a guy in kettering, 1st MOT was in Wellingborough in 1997. The original owners house was sold in 2008 according to Zoopla, but will try and trace him

Sylva Chassis number is S90185, if anyone has any comments on this it might take the guess work out of the age of the chassis. Other than a V5 and two MOTs I have no paperwork

Any comments of any type are appreciated

With a surname as famous as '' GOODE '' , is there any chance this ''Michael'' might be either a son or grandson of David Goode :?: I used to live next door to Tony Marsh's garage and saw David Goode's V8 Lola (hillclimb car) having it's gear change linkage moved from the central position to drivers right (David had his left arm amputated to the elbow)

You never know

Looks in very good condition for the age to me. In general it also looks well made, look at the nice rounded corners on the pedal box cover....but the fan mount is far from ideal. If its not been used for a few years I suspect the tyres are well off now, possibly bordering on lethal if my old A032R were anything to go by ;)

Can't really help with any of your specific questions though but enjoy :D

new switch arrived today, so may well get it started tonight.
Off to DVLA to sort the V5 out first, previous owner never registered it in his name, so will need to sort the SORN and other issues out with DVLA Worcester, which if my previous experience is anything to go by are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble- yes really!
generally yes, I think it is well built, few issues I noted, but let me make a proper inspection and then I'll do a list

Sylva Chassis number is S90185, if anyone has any comments on this it might take the guess work out of the age of the chassis.

The link relates to my chassis which is S90130, originally sold to the Northumberland area
I have a receipt for the deposit paid on the kit from Sylva dated 6th of April 1994 and also the recipt for the total paid on collection but this has no date.
The next piece of documentation places it in the Crewe area in early 1998.
The one final thing is that on the V5 its declared manufactured in 1979

Hope this helps.
Rich ;)

Ok, so I went to DVLA, gave them the old V5, with the previous [unregistered!] owners details in the new keepers box. Was told to scribble his details out and put mine in.
So I asked the guy to explain my chassis number SABTVRO3657325***
I told him i heard that it stood for 'stolen and bought to vehicle registration office' which he said was untrue, that it was a very common ID given by DVLA to both Q plated 'normal' cars where they had either been stolen/recovered [without ID] or built up from new shells, and to kit cars
then he explained the number
VRO- Vehicle Registration Office
0365- office that dealt with it- Northampton
7- registration year- it's a 1997
325- the Julian date, ie the day of the year- which coincides with the date [mostly] in Dec 97
***- I think this is the number given that relates to the quantity of vehicles registered by that office in that year

As usual i have nothing but praise for Worcester DVLA Office, walking in at 4.55 on a friday afternoon [traffic was horrendous] they were more than helpful. I imported a couple of bikes earlier in the year and hear some right horror stories about filling in the paperwork. I went in, they helped me fill it all out and was out in 10 mins. It'll be a shame if they do close the local offices

Not all of them, Oxford would be more efficient if closed.
