Hi all,
I have a live axle fury (with doors) and would like to replace the (midget???) fuel tank with something:
a) bigger
b) with a working sender
c) that doesn't p1ss fuel all over the place when full
d) with an integral swirl pot incase I decide to go FI
e) aluminium
Looking at the build manual it seems that the rear tub is bonded in place. I suspect that builder of my car took a shortcut when fitting the tank, the filler neck doesn't seem to seal with the tank.
Although I reckon I could potentially replace the tank from underneath, I think I need to take the tub off to get the filler connection sorted.
what do you reckon?

Re: replace fuel tank
You can get the tank out with the tub on but it requires a section cutting out of the bottom of the rear valance. I put an ally panel back over the cut-out.
The filler is usually connected between the tank and filler neck by a length of filler hose sealed with jubilee clips. If it's not currently like that it should be posible to fit the replacement that way. Just be sure the filler inlet is long enough to reach through the boot floor so you can fit the bottom clip in the boot.
You also need to make sure the inlet is in the same position as on the existing tank so it lines up with the filler neck on the body.
Having to remove the tub would be a last option for me.

Re: replace fuel tank
Isn't it possible to remove the tank by taking the link arms off the live axle OR is it independant
On the Stylus , I put the rear up on blocks then let the axle drop on the jack after taking out the four link bolts and shock bolts ---- easy after that

Re: replace fuel tank
I'm just about to replace mine with a tank I bought from Steve at FurySportsCars, I'll be able to tell you how it goes in a couple of weeks - not sure I'll get to it this weekend.
I got the midget tank out without cutting the rear valance just bending it a bit, mine was jubilee clipped to a bit of rock solid old filler hose between the filler cap and tank just as Adi described.
I'm planning on putting the car up on stands and dropping the rear axle - I think I should then have sufficient room to get the new tank in.
One thing I'll need to do is remove swarf from my new tank before using as I've got to bore a hole in it to fit the new VDO dip tube!
Cheers,
N

Thanks for the info ncd, I'd be really grateful if you could keep us posted on your progress.
Do you have the specs/cost of Steve's tank to hand?
Welcome to the forums by the way

Re: replace fuel tank
Hi,
Taking the tank out of a live axle is an easy job. I asked about it many years ago and got a few replys.
I have/had an extended midget tank which is 9.5 gal. The profile of it follows the rear valance.
What you need to do is disconnect the rear axle if you want to make it really easy. Or just drop it down a bit as Rob said.
I take off the all the bolts and whip the axle out. Its 6 bolts, two on the bottom (lower bar and shock) and one at the top (top bar).
Don't forget to disconnect the diff (4 bolts) and take the wheels off and the axle is heavy.Oops forgot the panhard rod one more bolt.
You could do ~Robs method but there is a possibility that the metallistic bushes could shear as you're leaving the lower bars connected to the chassis.
Once the axle is out the way dropping the tank is easy just 4 bolts and the clips that hold the fuel filler neck.
THE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER
The brake line might not be long enough to just drop the axle so you'll have to disconnect and bleed the rears.
THE UPGRADE BIT
You'll probably find that the bolts you are removing are M12's in 1/2" metallistic bushes. Now could be a good time to replace with 1/2" bolts UNF. Just ream out the holes a bit 0.7mm.
I am in the process of trying to get a new 9.5 gal tank sorted next week so i'll post up some pics dims and a price once its done.
MattD on here has got some CAD drawings of the tank he uses in his stylus which are useful.
It took me 45mins to whip the tank out a few weeks back so its not that bad. Putting it back should be the same but you may have to bleed the brakes.

Hello Fizzer ! , off topic but had to say we had a meal out with our friends in SCHOOL ROAD , just behind your abode , the other day then went for a walk around the village , passing your house as we went and peeped at the Fury under wraps . He told me of his chat with you when you were working on the car , coincidentally realising your aquaintance with me in the process

So ---- got the tank out then
