Cutting out a broken screen.

Postby pigeondave » Tue Nov 08, 2011 2:22 pm

Hi,

After a recent off (2 months ago, could be 3 come to think of it) I have finally got round to sorting the car.

What is the best way to get the old screen out ?
I have tried cutting it with a stanley knife and although I can get through its taking ages.

Any ideas

Dave

The pro's use a cutting wire that they get under a corner, fit a handle to each end and then use a back and fort sawing action. It makes light work of ot ut you'd have to be very carefull of the GRP frame; I think it might go through that as easy as the bonding.
Other than that they just use blades but in special handles. I'd stick at it with the knife... but better be quick there's only 6+1/2months to get it sorted.

I tried the cutting wire method when I came to replace the screen on my Fury , and found that where the glue was a bit thin the wire just steered off into the frame..........
After a few hours of trying I gave up , grabbed a sharp wood chisel , a hammer , and some safety goggles - and spent a whole day chiseling it out inch by inch............not a pleasant job , and very messy (powdered glass all over the place....)
8 is too many , 4 aint enough , so it's gotta be 6

The problem is that I don't want to fix it I want to upgrade it too.
I'll probably end up what you have done and just gaffer tape the bonnet.

I've found it easiest to remove a windshield by using the cable cutting method.

Just to update.

I have removed the screen, the best way I found was to use an old bicycle brake cable. I unwound two strands and pulled it around the screen which I had previously cut with a stanley knife.
Its all about getting the correct angle. If you get it right, the calbe only snaps about 4 times. I also used a door wedge to keep the screen away from the body a bit while cutting.

Now the wait is on for a new screen to turn up.
