You will need to remove it from the spline connctor before it will come back into the cabin.

I have a 'spare' escort mk2 outer column sat here next to my desk (as you do, anyone want it? :o ) and the inner column is a LOT easier to get out if you take the pin out and remove it into the cockpit....I did this myself a month or two ago ;)

Just undo the UJ, knock the scroll pin out and it should just slid out if the bearings are that bad :)

Great stuff, did you re-use the pin?

I could have done but I am doing away with the outer column (hence I now have a spare) and replacing it and the bushes with pillow bearings as I can't get a new top nylon bush past the welded on QR adapter. Its something I have got working 'on the bench' but yet to fit it to the car and it was a lot of work just because my top bush was gone :o

It will be worth it in the end as every year the MOT guy comments on it ;)

On the plus side of all this work to remove the outer column it saves 800g of weight

I like the sound of the pillow bearings - will be interested to hear how that goes.

I just had a chat with Steve at Fury sports cars and he was very helpful. In case anyone else needs the info, the bottom ball joints used to be available for a Sherpa but now they have changed the taper so Steve has custom ball joints made to fit. They are ~£37 each due to being custom but the Sherpa ones now tear up the boots apparently.

The track rod ends are just mk2 Escort so I'll be ebaying a set of those shortly.

Thanks for the help all

James

Regarding TRE depending on whether your front uprights are escort or capri they can be metric or imperial. Similarly the rack can be either metric or imperial.
None of it is rocket-science, but easy to make a mistake.

I compiled a bit of information a while back on this which might be helpful.

Crikey what a pain it has been! Both TREs were Escort and no problem, the ball joints were an issue because the wishbone tubes were protruding into the threads they screw into! Managed to get that done and tracked the other day near enough to where I want it.

I removed the steering column (and the exhaust manifold from the turbo where 2/4 of the studs snapped and a whole heap of other stuff along the way) but it had to come out into the engine bay which was not fun. I replaced the top roller bush with a nylon one. The bottom bush needed a bit of modifying to fit (grinding welds and folding metal tabs on the tube that guides the column) but will now go. Both the bushes in the links above were correct (thanks again!) and it was a corroded roll pin

All told it should be back together in a day or so and thanks again to those who offered advice, it was all correct.
