buying a kit car that already has an iva.

Postby 3cxjay » Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:43 am

Hi, could any one shed some light on this for me. ok i buy a kit car which is already registered and has an iva, mot ect. Can i then change the engine/drivetrain, brakes and colour and stil keep it on the road without needing another iva test? so once its had one iva test thats it for the car? Is it just a case of changing the log book cc and colour ect? thanks.

As far as I am aware just one IVA examination/certificate per vehicle. You can do what you like after that but engine number and colour changes should be notified to DVLA. It will of course still have to keep passing MOT tests.

As long as you don't alter the chassis (the odd bracket/mounting is OK) then you don't need a new IVA. But... Seeing as there's no detailed record of what the chassis was like at IVA, it'd have to be a pretty major change.
In fact you're allowed to rebuild with an identical replacement chassis ((with the old VIN) and still not require a new IVA.

Engine and colour changes just need to be reported (by filling in the relevant part of the v5) to DVLA for V5 alteration. They might want proof if the engine change moves the car into a lower tax band.
