I'm planning to replace the external (noisy, knackered) fuel pump with something that fits inside the tank (plastic, from Fisher) mounted on a removable pump plate. I've got a caterham pump plate assembly, and I can make up a clamping ring to go inside the tank with tapped holes for the 6 screws.
Before I bight the bullet and cut a massive hole in my tank, has anyone ever tried this? Horror stories about perpetual leakage most welcome...

It should work. Make the clamp ring as thick as possible.
If it doesn't work, I've got a spare plastic tank left over from fitting your old ally tank.

Re: In-tank fuel pumps in Fury plastic tank
Will do, although I'll need to work out how to split it to get it into the tank as it needs to be bigger than the hole. I'm thinking two stacked rings, each each with a slit (making them a C shape) but mounted 180 degrees apart. Will look at 'filling' the splits with material on the 'other' ring IYSWIM. I've got a plan for how to assemble it using long temporry studs to hold the rings in place whilst I pop the pump plate on.
You can thank me for the rain too - took the fury off the road 8 weeks ago to replace the dash, and ended up doing a lot of re-wiring. It's nearly there, so expect a marked improvement in weather from this weekend.
You guys still meeting up monthly? Managed to miss last summer entirely with holidays and house moves, want to do more car-based stuff this summer....

Re: In-tank fuel pumps in Fury plastic tank
If you were to use an intank pump that doesn't have a round base then you could put the retaining ring into the tank more easily.
You could consider a zx12r (circa 2002) pump.
Early ones don't have inbuilt pressure regulators, later i.e. 2006 do have inbuilt regulators. I ran a dead head system with gsxr1000 pump (the components of this look identical to those in the later zx12r pumps) which worked well and was nice and tidy (but the gsxr1000 has a round mounting plate). These mount in the underside of a tank.
I am not sure of your application (I have assumed EFI and < 200hp), so this my be a useless thought.
Earlier pump

Later pump

If the ring is thick enough then you'll probably be ok to to do it in one piece, put a saw cut in it and be able to spring it enough to get through the hole With a couple of studs in you can then assemble using the other holes, remove the studs and put your bolts in.
Not done any evening runs yet this year. Off to the Alps on Friday, so getting ready for that has taken up too much time. The monthly meet atmy work never attracted nore than one other so I kicked it into touch.
