Front roll cage mount

Being in the middle of upgrading/rebuilding my Striker I'm considering converting to a full roll cage as I intend to compete in hillclimbs and sprints. The trouble is I'm not sure how to go about mounting the bottom of the front hoop to the frame.I'd be gratefull for any pics or ideas.

There are obviously a few designes, but the "work" design as per Davids orange Striker is as follows -

The front hoop essentially repeats the shape of the front scuttle (1 inch angle) frame that the windscreen fits to.

Mounting plates are welded at the intersection of the scuttle top rail and the angled (1inch box) rails that would together support a flat dash panel. In fact imagine fitting a flat dash panel but cutting everything away but a triangular plate in each of the two top corners.

The front hoop mounts on to these, following the line and angle of a full windscreen, a centimeters behind and shorted than a full windscreen.

Mine has a couple of short additional verticals 1/2 inch box sections pieces in to further reinforce the triangle of the scuttle on each side.

Unless you are 5ft7 or shorter you may struggle with the 5cm rule. i.e the top of the cage must be 5cm above the top of your helmet once you are seated in the car. I'm 6 ft tall and needed to replace the rear roll hoop with one 12-14 cm taller than the original. Some have additional hoops grafted on but I was warned off this approach by scrutineers.

Rear stays need to be min 30 deg off vertical and close to top of rear hoop

Read blue book competitor safety section carefully re specs . can be downloaded for free off MSA website if you haven't got your nat b yet.

Thanks for that Paul - I was wondering whether I might need to increase the height of the rear hoop just have'nt got round to sitting in the car with a lid on yet
Andy I'd be grateful for a few pics - really unsure on how to make up the mounts at th end of the hoop and how to bolt/fix this through the side panel and into the plate that Paul suggests.

Andy , your cage at the top is very nearly touching your helmet in the photo . For competition it ought to clear your helmet by 2 or 3 inches because a line drawn from rear roll hoop to front bonnet should clear by 2 inchess PLUS if you ended up on track upside down you could break your neck .

Raw built and fitted my roll-cage to my requests (far too unsophisticated to be called specifications).

It differs from Andy's in three respects:
1. I had the "standard height" roll-over bar behind the head replaced with a taller one (I think safer, and helps with scrute*)
2. my forward-and-aft bars are bent outwards to give a little more lateral protection
3. the forward loop is welded directly to the gusseted chassis immediately behind where the windscreen would be (I thought better strength and torsional stiffness).

Neither 1 nor 3 might be easy for a DIY fit.

Edited to say: * scrute might moan about a roll-cage which is a little lower than the regs demand, but he/she is very unlikely to try to exclude you because (unless this year's blue book has changed the regs) you could become legal with a road going car simply by removing the cage completely!!!

This is how it was done to mine, it's a removable cage, that's why everything is on the outside of the car.





Only for road use though.
