Hi all,

Im looking to upgrade my English axle with Capri (Atlas) halfshafts. This is supposedly better than buying the expensive Quaife heavy duty English halfshafts.

Does anyone know how long the(Atlas) halfshafts need to be, how may splines they are supposed to have and if it makes a difference if I go for the one piece or two piece Atlas halfshafts.

The number of splines doesn't matter as my new LSD will be spec'd to accommodate what ever it is, but I do need to know.

i think the Atlas shafts are longer??? not sure but someone will be along to confirm, next one is do you need to upgrade them?

Atlas axles are 52" normal although you can get them as Baby Atlas at 50" (same as Englsh). I would be interested to see how you get on with this for obvious reasons.

I spoke to Matt at Procomp (who was more than helpful) and he said that there is an option to use as fiat or lada rear axle.
They are very similar to the English axle but they have had some improvements done to them.
The only down side is that they don't do a LSD for them. The plus side is that they are still lighter than the atlas.
I suppose the last thing you want is an extra 20kg of atlas on top of the charger weight and all the other bits and bobs.
Are you going to go for a full roll cage too?

I was given a figure of 180ft/lbs for the english and told its better to spend 20mins changing a halfshaft, than a while longer sorting the gearbox if something goes pop. Although I hope the BGH box doesn't go pop.

Might be worth a call to Procomp as you torque figures are a bit higher than my 179ft/lbs.

BGH rate the hd box in my car at 250 lb ft....which is exactly what the supercharged zetec will make (give or take a bit). I had a long conversation with Fostek and they said it was easier to leave the stock half-shafts in and replace as required as any upgrade would cause issues with the diff itself. They believe my car will be fine as it will be traction limited and not bouncing around in a forest under a Mk2 Escort (which is what kills them apparently). So we shall see.

I have bought some Castrol BP 373 diff oil which is meant to help with heat in racing situations.
