Postby Darkspeed » Wed Jan 05, 2011 11:46 pm

We have taken delivery of the car and have started the build.

First couple of pictures just before we took it off the tailer.

As you can see the Duratec has required some unflattering modifiactions to the bonnet - Grille mesh is on the to be replaced list

Job list is being drawn up

Good luck. There isn't much sticking out though....must only be a few mm.

That is going to be lovely. Nice wheel compomotive 4-spokes are the best.

Shouldn't have to change the shape too much to get rid of those holes. Lovely colour and the right bonnet. The light covers will look sexy on that, just fitted them on my classic fronted fury.

Bloke who makes them is Andy westgate, very helpful and efficient service....(nothing to do with me just a pleased customer and I know they'll look good)... His number is 07733282947 if you're interested! Good luck!

I have already dropped Andy and e-mail for prices on the light covers and the order will be placed shortly - The thoughts are to finish the car in Ecurie Ecosse metalic blue once all the bonnet smoothing has been completed.

The rocker cover sticks out more than is apparent in the photo - even with the cover removed the cam chain would be proud of the bonnet to clear the existing cover its a good 32mm and a backplate type ITG/PiperX filter would add considerably to the height of the induction on the throttle bodies. - Worry with that respect is induction noise and if it will need a induction box.

4 Spoke revolutions get my vote on this car as well

Should look good, keep us updated. Dunno what other forums you're on, but pistonheads kit car section and locostbuilders forum are also very good for info.

Noise wise, if you mean airbox for trackdays it is likely. Different motor in mine (R1) but I'm just about to fit an airbox to mine to shut it up a tad. The ram air makes a big difference on bike engines too, dont know whether same applies to your duratec. Pipercross do a very shallow (78mm) airbox which may be useful? That's what's going on my R1 engine.

Don't get carried away with ram-air. The effect increases with speed squared.

When you run the numbers it turns out very weak. Basically these sports bikes are rated to do over 180mph which means they can claim significant ramair bhp.
So if you are doing 60mph you will get 1/9 of the effect.
At 90mph you will get 1/4 of the effect.

The real benefit it cool air.

Airbox would be for noise reduction if its found to be too much and as the Duratec appears to need quite long bellmouths 100mm+ for torque improvements the box would also need to be quite large. A way off yet though. No interst in ram air effect housing. Ram air is all well and good if you spend the time in a windtunnel idetifying an area on the vehicle that is in a key high pressure area to make use of what would be available. Indescriminate positioning is more likely to produce no effect or a detrimental effect.

I spent quite a few years with development of ram air inflatable wings for kites and paragliders and take a keen interest in aerodynamic effects on cars.

A few more pictures of the car before we get stuck in to the build

The previous owner had an exhaust built from drawings and unfortunately it is a bit higher than it should be so I will be modifying it at the collector to get it closer to the centre of the pod.

Alternator is a tad close but there may be an option with a smaller one for clearance - as I am sure I read somewhere that the standard alternators are ECU controlled

Throttle bodies with air horns in a nice shade of blue - To be well hidden by the filter box

Need to get a close look at the handbrake cable run as the calipers are upside down and the cable run is not really smooth.

Shocks look to have plenty of adjustment on them so that we can get the ride hieght high enough to get the headlamps to 500mm

Bit of advice / assistance required

In the photos above of the rear suspension you will notice that the rear calipers are mounted aft of the rear axle line - In the gallery on the BGH site all of the installations I can find have the caliper mounted fore of the axle line. ?!

The concern is the routing of the handbrake cable which does not look - "smooth" for want of a better description.

Cheers

Andrew
