Fury queries

Postby Yazza54 » Mon Oct 18, 2010 7:29 pm

Hello! I am the new owner of Ians fury... Just a few queries :)

Can anyone direct me to a good place to buy lexan for making a full aero screen, and whats best to cut it with?

Another one... My car is fitted with hispec brakes, I seem to get no feel through the pedal unless I absolutely stand on the brakes. Is there a way of improving this? Considering how light the car is it doesn't seem right, I guess it's because there's no servo. But the rest of the cars inputs are lovely and responsive and I'd like the brakes to be the same. I've noticed some use wilwood, do they perform any better or just generally a personal preference?

Are there any nice alloy light rear calipers with handbrake to match the lightweight front ones?

By no means complaining about the car, I bloody love it! Ian's done a brilliant job. Would just like a tad more feel from the brakes and a bit more shelter as I'm quite tall.

Thanks, Ryan :)

Brakes are very subjective. They all need a firm push on the pedal but you can improve the feel (depends what kit it on there already). Pad type and Disc size all makes a difference, as does master cylinder bore size. There is no particular reason to go from HiSpec to Wilwood.

Thanks for the reply, will look into the compound and master cylinders. Are the rear brakes sierra fitment?

Rear brakes. Default will be Sierra (same as Caterham and Westfield and most other kit cars out there)

Hi-Spec do a rear caliper with handbrake on it. Some poor reports on service from hi-spec, but made in england.
Wilwood do some with a Heath Robinson handbrake fitting that some people like (rallydesign are cheapest for wilwood).
Golf Mk4 rear calipers, are ~600g lighter than Sierra, use funny banjo fittings, but don't fit under many 13inch wheels.

Maybe other options out there (Dan Bromilow tried BMW Mini rears), I have hear that 205 rears are quite light, but that the mounting fouls the upright.

There is probably more potential to save weight with the disk;
Sierra rear non-ventilated disk 3.320kg
Escort Mk3 front disk 3.550kg, 240mm diameter, moves braking surface well inboard
Fiesta Mk3 front disk, 3.180kg, 240mm diameter, moves braking surface inboard, but not as far as Escort.
Both the Escort and Fiesta need the standard hub to be machined down by a few mm (easier to write than to do).

Peug/Citroen use thinner disks, 8mm which are probably a bit lighter still, but I haven't practical experience of those.

Hi Ryan,

Upgrades already hey?? :D

I too felt the Hi specs were a bit 'wooden', I've heard that the Wilwoods have a better feel to them. You could sell the hi specs on here or ebay and recoup some money so it might not cost too much to swap. I know some of the RGB racers prefer Wilwoods to hi spec.

Having said that, when you really start to get heat into them they do start to get more feel, but it takes an Alpine descent with loads of hairpins, or a track!

Adrian has the Wilwoods front and rear, hopefully he can comment.

As far as weight savings, I had the centres of the rear discs machined out which saved about 250g per side (I was obsessed!!). The rear sierra calipers aren't actually 'that' heavy, but undoubtedly some shiny ali ones would be lighter.

Cheers, Ian

Hey Ian

Only a couple of bits, but I like to have a list to go at :P

I see the R1 can be bored to 1080 too....

Just kidding, or am I.... ;)

Nah all I really need is more wind protection, the brakes would be nicer with more feel. Will have to see what I can do with them before spending on Wilwoods, although they are surprisingly cheap. Are the AVOs on my car steel or ally? Look like steel to me. Oh tell a lie, I'm forgetting, I've ordered some graves slide stops from the states to get rid of those primary slides in the throttle bodies. The slides are apprently there to smoothen the acceleration, but seen as though I'm not going to be doing any unexpected wheelying any time soon I'm going to give it a try without. The bikers rave about the difference in throttle response, as the slides seem to be quite restrictive...even when fully open...

Should probably check the air:fuel on rollers after that. Easy enough to put back if they don't work so good and it's a cheap mod. Also going to look into velocity stacks, bit limited to length but doesn't hurt to research! I know I've had the car not 5 mins but can't help it when I see things like that, must be a restriction! Oh I could tell what you meant about the performance being that bit sharper with no passenger Ian, though my passenger didn't seem to notice! More worried about catching his breath methinks :P

Ah I've got upgradeitis already. Sorry Ian, I feel like I'm messing about with your daughter or something  I'll take good care of her!

Very funny!!! Glad you're getting stuck into 'her', that's part of the fun. The shocks are steel from memory.

There's a huge difference in performance with a passenger, but you're right, it's still plenty quick enough to give them a decent

Slight update on the brakes...spoke to BGH and they say the front master cyl should be 6.25..which it is. However they say the rear should be 7, but mine is 6.75. So maybe there's not enough bias going to the front?

Before I delve into that deeper I'm going to try standard compound pads and shotblast the discs. Cheapest option at £20 ;) The std pads are elise s1 road pads and the elise is still a fatty compared to a BEC Fury.

They also make the aero screens so I'm having a full size one made slightly taller than their std size. Was going to make it myself but it's not worth it, by the time I've got a sheet delivered and f'cked the first up I could've bought and fitted one!

Think I need a new battery too, not holding charge very well...not the end of the world. Has it been on since build Ian?

A nice experience talking to BGH, they actually know what they're talking about and seem enthusiastic, as does everyone else I've spoken to regarding the Fury. Nice change for me as most people I've had dealings with 'GTM' related when I had my Libra, just messed me about.

Happy Chappy.

On the aeroscreen make sure you can see over the screen when strapped in. Early morning runs can mean the inside of the screen mists up and if you can't see over the top.....Same thing can happen in heavy rain. I ended up taking 2 inches off the height of my screen because of this.

Hi Ryan,

Congratulations on your purchase!

I'd be interested to hear you get on with the throttle slide kit, I'd never heard of those before!

I remember reading somewhere that the lack of braking feel when using HiSpec calipers was a result of the calipers flexing under load - some people have experienced unven pad wear with HiSpecs which could be evidence of this. I'm afraid I can't speak from my own experience though, but might be worth a search on the Sylva Chat google group - I think there's a thread or two about the HiSpecs on there.
