Hi Guys,
Hopefully you have seen my introduction thread.
I have my new striker, just have a few questions to start:
1. Engine Mounts
The car has a 1300 xflow. From what i can see, there are only 2 engine mounts which are identical and on opposing sides of the engine.
Does that sound right? i know it's a diddy engine, but i thought engines usually have at least 3 mounts?
2. Steering Rack
I don't know what the steering rack is actually from, but it looks like this:
Now i have part of a steering column, but it's definitely not long enough to get from the rack to the wheel, i was just wondering what column options i have that would bolt straight onto the rack spline (i know it probably depends on the spline size but i don't know what that is....)
3. Fuel Tank
There is a strange small pipe coming out and down from the filler tube going into the fuel tank.
What does this do and where do i need to run it to?
3. Engine inlet
Time for the can of worms.... well i'll try to make the question easy.... here is my engine:
You will notice there is no throttle body/carb. Without having to chop up my bonnet, what would be my best option of what to do with the missing parts? dual webbers, standard body, and do i need to do anything about the dizzy being in the way? I would like the solution that not going to cost me too much (that means as little as possible really) but also to be fairly easy to set up. I know this is a bit of a vague one but i don't really know that much about engines themselves...
Thanks in advance for the help!
Andy

Andy.
Engine mounts - yes that's correct. There is also a mounting point on the cross member under the gearbox.
Steering rack - Mk 2 Ford Escort.
Fuel tank - It's a vent to let air in to fill the gap as you burn the petrol. connect a length of rubber fuel hose to it and fit a one-way valve to stop your petrol emptying out of it on left hand bends. (done that)
Engine - This is a ford kent engine known to most as a crossflow or Xflow, because inlet and exhaust ports are on the oposite side of the head. This is most likely also out of the donor mk2 escort. approx 1968-1980 vintage.
Standard inlet manifold which would have had a down draft carb fitted mpg probably 30-32. You are correct if you were to re-fit one you would need a hole in the bonnet, lots of pre SVA / IVA Strikers did, usually with a nice chrome airfilter on top. But if your car is not registered or as your bonnet has survived so far without a hole, I'd keep it that way. You may want to get an inlet and a pair of twin 40 side draught carbs. It's very likely someone on this list or locost builders will have some going when you are ready. a lot of people are moving to injection systems so a pair of twin 40's and manifold will be £120-£150. These will give you an improvement in performance at the cost of a economy 18-24mpg. But sound great and will fit under the bonnet without cutting it, provided you get the correct shallow manifold and not a tall one used for rally Escorts.
hopefully the following couple of picks will be of use .
welcome .
Paul.

thanks for the response!
i'm not sure if it's in vain or not yet though as i may be changing the engine to something like a zetec....
On that note, to get it to fit in the car what would i need in terms of:
4 branch manifold
engine mounts
clutch to the type 9

Re: Few questions on my new striker....
regarding steering column, the rack is escort mk2, but the steering column you need is also from a mk2 escort i think, unless osmeone altered the mounting in the cockpit to take the sierra column. No column mounts straight to the rack, it needs another part in between of them.
regarding the zetec, what you need is, engine mounts, exhaust manifold, clutch release bearing to suit, spigot bearing, if it's a 2l zetec a 1.8 zetec flywheel, correct clutchdisc, assuming it's a pre aug95 engine inlet manifold, carbs, megajolt, edis4, again if it's a 2l zetec a cut/modified sump.
If it's a post aug95 engine, then you need injection bodies, ecu, catalyst, lamda probe, injection fuel tank, injection fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel return line instead of the carb/megajolt stuff
So if you're on a tight budget, don't even think about the zetec! Just get a dcoe inlet manifold for the xflow and some carbs and off you are. If buying the correct dcoe inlet manifold it wont interfere with the dizzy(angled cap needed) as the carbs are lifted up a bit then like in Paul's 2nd picture.

Re: Few questions on my new striker....
Andy,
One option is to buy a spare 1600/1700cc crossflow complete. If I put a new engine in my Striker this winter, then it is likely that I will be selling my complete engine, gearbox, carbs, exhaust manifold etc etc.
This isn't a sales pitch because I haven't made up my mind yet, but this will be a cheaper option than a Zetec, given what you have bought.
You need to be aware that if you do have a 4 speed gearbox, then the 5 speed type 9 mounts in the transmission tunnel slightly differently.
If the weather holds this weekend, then I will take some pics of how the steering column fits to the rack on my Striker.

Re: Few questions on my new striker....
Just noticed Paul has already suggested in the Introductions thread what I put below !!
This was how I got my first crossflow engine - from someone who was upgrading (?) a Fury to Fireblade engine,.

Mine is a 5 speed type 9 already which is handy....
oh i can't decide what to do...an old mondeo costs nothing nowadays and would have most of the stuff i need.....

Have you read my post above? From my list all that the mondeo has is the engine, nothing more, unless it's a escort 1.8, then you don't need a different flywheel and the sump might just do, though advised to be shortened. A 1.8 mondeo is no good either as it's the same as the 2l regarding sump.

Re: Few questions on my new striker....
Sorry missed a bit - Steering column, yes Mk2 escort , cut and extended with some steel tube, with an Austin Allegro UJ in it to give an offset.
Paul.
PS. Yes Pete glad you didn't mind me trying to sell bits of your car from under you. By the way I could have a buyer lined up for your house, you did say you were moving didn't you..........
