Need a new trolley jack

Postby petercoll » Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:18 am

My old beaten up Halfords trolley jack has finally given up the ghost (years of lifting a Land-Rover did it I think).

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced low-level jack please - something that will fit easily under a Striker chassis rail ?

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks for that - looks like the sort of thing I am after.

Hi Peter
I bought this one- quite light weight and fits under my Striker no problem and lifts it quite high http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... sion-jacks

I have the Clark one and I don't trust it. The design is such that when you lift the car it the car moves not the jack. So this means the chassis member you started with in the middle of the pad ends up moving across the pad and, potentially, falling off the jack. I've had the car fall off the jack twice which has cost me a £300 aluminium radiator already.

I've had similar near misses in the past where the car hasn't moved and the jack has not rolled slightly as expected (due to my uneven garage floor) resulting in the pad effectively moving across the chassis. Luckily I noticed it before it was too late - scary moment though. I considered a floor issue rather than a problem with the jack.

Never had the problem on anything but the aluminium Clarke type ones, normal trolley jack works fine on the same floor.

You lot are all so fancy.

I use a 2meter wooden fence post.

It works well, and was very cheap (actually a spare).

It is multi-functional too, here it is being used as an engine hoist (actually that should be "engine joist").
