Hi all,

I'm looking to get a camera for in car video, and was hoping for some advice on camera's and recording devices. I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to technical stuff!

How do you view what you've recorded? Is it a case of plugging into the laptop back home? Has anyone used a system that you can view recorded footage whilst you're in the car? The trip is 10 days, so I don't want to record loads of footage and not be able to view it whilst away. I also want to be able to delete any unusable stuff while I'm away, to save disc space.

I've looked on a few websites, and would like HD quality so I can get a good picture on my TV. I like the functionality of the Go Pro HD, as it can also take still photo's on an intermittant cycle and it can also be used as a 5MP waterproof camera. Anyone used one? It looks a bit clunky, and I'd still need something to view the footage on and I don't fancy taking my laptop away.

What about bullet cams? Again, any recommendations and what about viewing it whilst away?

Any advice or experiences good or bad appreciated.

Well after 3 hours searching and googling I can't find anything out there that does exactly what I want.

Contour HD and Go Pro HD don't have screens, or even viewfinders - so you can't view what you've filmed while you're out and about, and you can't check to make sure you're pointing in exactly the right direction, which seems odd. Contour do have lasers to help you set the shot up, but can't imagine they'd be much good in bright sunshine.

The best overall package I've found is from Dogcam.

It's not HD but hopefully would still be decent quality. It's a shame really, I was hoping to find a sensible price HD package. The main thing is that I actually want to be able to view what I've recorded.

Adrian Thorpe had a camera/recorder at Llandow. Not sure it was HD, but it was tiny, and had a screen.

I've got an earlier version of that kit. The pictures are OK but there's no sound and the recording time is limited. Although it's ok on a track day I'm not taking it to France. The other problem I have is my laptop has taken a dislike to it and refuses to recognise it when I try and download the Llandow footage... and I don't have time at the moment to spend on it. Last time I did get it downloaded but couldn't view it...

Conclusion: I'm a numpty with this stuff and I don't have the knowledge to recomend anything.

PS. If the built in screen is anything like on mine it's not really up to using to decide what to delete.

Now I am intrigued! I've got a new HTC touch pro phone that does all kinds of things that I'm not capable of operating, but it does have a large high quality screen. Maybe I could use this to view content???

my htc hero has a 5 megapixle camara and the video is great quality you just need a decent sd card and a universal mount in fact i will try it out myself as I have a copy md 80 camara that you cant see what your taking. I will let you know

I use a regular Sony camcorder, a few years old and I bought a LANC controller from Keene electronics I think so that I can control the recording remotely which is great. I use a bullet camera which has enough definition to be viewed on a 50" telly and th is can be bought from Keene too. I got them a few years ago but I'm sure they are still available or something better. The bullet camera just gets jubilee clipped to the roll bar so its solid and I can view my footage any time I like. Quality can be viewed here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0QOqPR0XT4
