Hi all.
I am building a J15 at the bottom of my garden.
I have a 16' x 12' area marked out to play with. I was going to get a 12' x 8' shed/workshop to cover half the area, and use the other 12' x 8' space to assemble the car in. I could get a smaller shed, say 12' x 6',but people build in a single garage, which is narrower than 8',dont they?? Or will I struggle with 8' to move around in?
Any input appreciated,as I am at the stage now when I am ready to order the shed.
Many thanks, James.
Enough room?

Re: Enough room?
From reading that I'm confused. 12x8 workshop and then you're building alongside (outside)that?
I'd make the shed as big as you can.

Re: Enough room?
Sorry!
That is right. 12 x 8 workshop,car being built in 12 x 8 area outside.(closed on 3 sides,and will probably build a roof onto build area too.)
I was just wondering if I was going to spend the next 2 years tripping over myself, and whether I could save myself some bruised ankles by giving myself an extra 2' of width to the build area, but sacrificing 2' of workshop area?
Cheers James.

Re: Enough room?
I'd be inclined to build one 12x16 combined garage/workshop. It's no more walls than what you have planned now. At 12x8 you're not going to have a lot of room around it to work. Given the British weather you want to be indoors building it!

Re: Enough room?
Good point.
To be honest I dont think I could get the cost of a building that size past the other half.
I always have to keep an eye on the W.A.F. (wife approval factor).
That size of structure at the bottom of the garden might be pushing it a bit.
I will see what I can do though.
Thanks for the input.
James.

Re: Enough room?
Ahh, the WAF. Not something I have to worry about.
So the real plan is one 12x8 shed. Then enclose the other 12x8 by adding 2 walls (making three), then add a roof, then add some doors, then take out the dividing wall... And the Mrs won't notice you've got a 12x16 workshop/garage.
Nice, but I think the WAF might be 0 and your dangly bits might be at risk!

You got it!!
I promised her that after the car is built,it would make a nice patio!!
Luckily I am incorporating it into a complete garden redesign,so WAF is at the usual level of around4/10 for now.
Cheers James

Re: Enough room?
The problem there is that Kit cars are "never" finished, so she will not realistically get her patio back until you're 75.
12 by 8 is tight. the cars are typically 10' 6" long and just under 5 feet wide, but assuming your bench etc will be in the shed, so fabrication and component prep will be done in there it should be workable. I would at least factor in the cost of the "car port" roof in the initial build. best to keep dry while building and useful for bbq's afterwards. Of course the later is you prime reason for including it in the costs , selfless to the last.

Re: Enough room?
I think you should have "sold it" as a summer house, rather than a patio. Either way she won't give you any stick untill we have a decent summer, so you should be safe for a while.

Re: Enough room?
Cheers guys.
The "car port" section could be disguised as an ornamental pergola maybe?
I am happy that 12 x 8 should be do-able,as the workshop should give me enough room for fabrication etc.
Thanks for the help.
James.
