I have been doing a little digging on this subject, and from what I can see, around 280mm seems to be the favorate using a normal rack, but with a quick rack fitted, anything smaller than 300mm,takes some serious muscles to move, unless on track??
I am coming from purely second hand info,as I am only starting my build.( I have bought a quick rack, and a momo 300mm race wheel for my J15.)
Hope this helps,Chet. It would be nice to hear if my conclusions are anywhere near the mark, from experience??
Cheers James.

I have a 2.4 quickrack and a 260mm wheel....and muscles like Arnold, not. It isn't a problem in such a light car, just make sure the wheel is at a comfortable distance for you. 300mm or large will feel and look huge. Actually, thinking about it, I'll measure my wheel and report back as it could be 280mm.

2.4 quick rack and Momo model 26, 280mm. You can almost think the car round corners on the road, no problem with steering weight. Although after a 4 hour drive on Sunday i can definately feel my arm muscles!!

It very much depends on the steering ratio . Personally I couldn't care less what it looks like as long as I can handle the car well on track. My rack is a 2.4 and steering wheel is 320mm's . On top of that I cut and shut the steering arms to avoid bump steer which shortened them by 15mm's . That resulted in a 1.7 turns lock to lock which actually has been really great on track over the last few years for high speed adjustments
However , I'm definitely getting weaker in the arms/shoulders since retirement because my test day at Goodwood on Tuesday absolutely knackered me , having last driven it on track in Oct 2009. I'm now going the other way to make it easier to manhandle around the corners ---- 14 inch ordered today ie. 356mm's ;)

The off-set on the other hand is just about your comfortable ' elbows dipped ' driving position , which is dependant on your build/arms length and seat position
