Newbie questions

Morning all. Since my welcome post in Sept my stylus has been on hold due to other projects. Its got MOT until end of summer , so I've taxed and insured it and gone for a shakedown run.
It's a sylva 1997 model and looks like it's not done much mileage and has not been modified since the build. It's got a 131 fiat twin cam 2ltr running on 40s, fiat 5speed box to escort back axle.
It ran like a dog , poping, hissing and missing at revs, and brakes were as expected for a car been stored. My plan is to get the engine running properly, make it stop better and use it for next 6 months, making a work list for the winter. Most things now need a cosmetic tidy up.
My question is was there a standard set up for cars of this year/ era? Or a list of most used parts. Things like ball joints, track rod ends, uprights, steering rack, disks, calipers, master cylinder etc.
Or is it a case of photograph and forum everytime?

I have found a copy of the ssc build manual, is there another one for earlier cars?

Thanks

John

Hi,

I'm not overly familiar with the Stylus.

The Stylus forum is even quieter than here but its still up and is a great source of information.

You could try the new owners of the moulds and jigs.

Siltech racing?

Or post pics and ask.

The pictures show how crappy the car is under the shiny surface. It needs quite a bit of recommissioning after being laid up by previous owners for so long.

Can anyone identify the hubs, disks, calipers, steering and ball joints?

It looks same as pictures of sylva Strikers.

Any help greatly appreciated.

John

I have never looked that close at a Stylus but I know a bit about Strikers. My mid 90's built Striker with live axle has Escort hubs, brakes, disks, steering rack and track rods ends. My later (mid 00's) Striker with IRS is now Sierra hubs, brakes, disks etc but still with the Escort steering rack and track rods.

I can never remember what the ball joints are, I want to say the early ones are a Sherpa van and the latter ones are Metro but I am not 100% sure on either of these (sorry)!

I am struggling to post pictures. I have reduced using a tool to 100kb or less and still saying too large??
Is there a trick to this?

This is 97 model so I guess not too far from your earlier striker. Do these look like escort parts?

that looks like a cut down escort strut.
so its excort hubs.

Becareful if youre going to go for ally replacement hubs as the rally design ones and hi-spec push the wheels out 10mm.

Those brake calipers are heavy as £$%^. When you get upgradeitus you'll be wanting some willwoods which are easily half the weight and a straight swap. Saving on unsprung weight is good.

Looks like my Striker so:

Bottom ball joint should be Sherpa right hand - 5/8" UNF. Quinton Hazel number QR 1774

Top ball joint is Chevette item. Quinton Hazel number QSJ 709S

Track rod ends will be standard Escort items - metric or imperial depending on rack.
