BEC & Reverse Gear

I’m currently looking at a superb R1 engined Fury but, it doesn’t have a reverse gear.

This doesn’t bother me in practical terms but I’m worried about MOT time. I’m pretty sure no reverse gear is needed to pass and MOT but you know when you get that nagging doubt.......

I believe reverse is only required for IVA and not for the MoT.

Not required for MOT. It's required for IVA but wasn't for the previous SVA which is why Jims car, mine and many others don't have them (there's also no rules saying they can't be removed from a car after IVA).

As to practicalities; Mines been on the road without for ten years and there have been very few times I've had an issue (2 I can remember and one of them was because I was following a mate who deliberately turned down a dead end street to wind me up). You avoid parking downhill into a blind space. Roll back into them. Look for drive through spaces in car parks and if there aren't any push back in (then you can belt up and drive out). In narrow streets don't get too close to the car in front. You get pretty good at spotting slopes you can use to reverse. If all else fails right pedal will spin it round!

Thanks for the responses, all of them really helpful.

What’s a BEC like to live with?

36500 miles on mine now. Loved every one of them.

I've been told by a bloke that's got an orange one.

"lighter than an F1 car and revs higher"

so fairly fun

I think I'm going to dip my toe in the BEC water. I was a little worried about emissions testing at MOT time and a couple of other things but I think James Ashcroft (who's car I've fallen in love with) has pretty much put my mind at rest.

His car is a thing of beauty and exactly what I've been looking for - just got to sell my Caterham and I'm in!
