How black is diff oil supposed to be?

I think my diff (English axle Titan carbon plate diff) is starting to make a bit of noise. Its probably a bearing. I checked the oil level and it was OK but the oil was very black.
Im thinking of changing it.
What are others using GL4 or GL5
I have an idea myself but would like to know what others use?

Fairly sure diff oil isn't meant to be black at all...

Generally diff (+gearbox) oil doesn't go black. Normally stays very clear with possibly a slight metalic sheen when drained, however I don't have enough experience with LSD's to know whether that makes a difference. I guess it's possible that the carbo plates might cause it.

Spoken to Titan i should be using Motul 75-W140 competition oil.
Also spoke to a well regarded builder of diffs who said go with Titans recommendation. Although previously they hinted that the oil i had in was too thin.
Balls, I hope I've not done any damage. I suppose plate diffs can always be rebuilt...
Out with the sucky thing (insert girlfriend joke here) this weekend to get the old oil out.

I was recently astonished to discover that the diff oil in my 2010 BMW (50,000miles, open) was grey/black with a mild sheen! BMW claims that the diff oil doesn't need to be changed - it's is filled for life - I don't agree.
The LSD oil in my Toyota 4x4 was still golden brown at a similar mileage.
It's not just the LSD plates that cause the blackness. Good luck.
