Took her out for a shakedown and it would get to around 2,500-3000 and would struggle to accelerate beyond just a light open throttle. Would rumble and judder. On a light throttle it would rev all the way up to max, but only very slowly. Generally not much performance.
Suspicion is old fuel (4-5 months old) and dirt/rust in fuel system - is this dirty enough to cause an issue - pics below?
I'd like to change the tank for the ss version (classic mini van) but would need to modify the neck and add a vent - job for another day.
Let me know what you think.

That's a lot of crud in the fuel filter! Certainly sounds like fuel starvation. I once had those symptoms on my old Star and it turned out to be the remains of a bee wedged in the fuel line

Re: 1999 Striker rebuild
tank is rusting from the inside for that much poo to be in the filter.
you'll wash it out only to break down in the pyrenees and spend two days telling a ford main dealer that they cant fix it and fly home.
dont waste your time, get the stainless tank and a ultrasonic cleaner and clean the jets off the carbs in it. you'll also have to clean out the float bowls. Be careful as cab cleaner really burns your eye if you get splash back.

Re: 1999 Striker rebuild
Thats a lot of shite in there. Only real answer is a new tank. As Dave says be sure to clean the float bowls out and also give the lines a good flush as the sediment will have settled in and dips in those as well. I'd stick a sacrificial cheap in-line filter before your existing one as well (just temporarily).
If you're having mods' done to the new tank then I'd consider adding a return line, just to future-proof it should you ever decide to go to injection.
Blocked lines and crap from the tank can be frustrating. This is how I dealt with it when it happened to Dave in the Pyrenees...

Re: 1999 Striker rebuild
Thanks for responses.
The tank looked pretty cruddy inside and is from the 70s so bought a SS replacement. Aside from rotating neck, am intending to weld on thin ss tube for breather/valve connection.
Will have to figure out how to clean the carb etc...
As for fuel line, ive bought a load of new filters so was thinking of sacrificing one for initial clean.
Just need to get it sorted before Iva as application has been processed

Re: 1999 Striker rebuild
i had a similar issue...the tank was totally corroded inside...
8 bottles of this:
the rest topped up with water
my old battery charger:
the minus connected to the tank
the plus via a steel rod inside the chlor-water mix
a few days later the tank was totally clean and rust free inside
the tank was removed from the car and the procedure was done outside for ventilation reasons

Ready to go back in after some tig (and re soldering) action.
The re-soldering (not shown in pic) was done using sandpaper, wire brush, phosphoric acid (45%), ear swabs, 60/40 tin/lead solder and camping torch. Worked a treat.
