Hi Guys,

I am currently building a Fury and at the point of fitting the radiator but am getting conflicting reports on which one I need. Steve at Fury said a MKII polo rad but there seems to be loads and im unsure of which one to get and he couldnt be more specific. The fixings on my chassis are 460mm apart and 180mm top to bottom. The VW302 seems too narrow and the VW303 too wide. I would rather get the wider one but need to make sure it will fit under a Le Mans bonnet.

If someone could help identify which one I need that would be great thank you.

The commonly used Fury one is from Polo mk2 1.1/1.3 (manual, non-AC) (also 1/1.3ltmk2 Golf). The core is 430x322mm and 460 across the mounting holes

I used this one as it was a little bigger

you just need to make some ears to mount it.
I went for this size as the area is similar to what they use in the crossle 9s i have similar spec engine to what goes in these so i thought if its good for them its good for me.
Although theirs is an ally rad and the cores thicker.

its also a good idea to make a mouth around the rad so the air is forced through it and not hit it and go round the sides.

Also check the position of the vertical bracket in relation to the bit coming out from the chassis. Mine is welded on about 1/3rd down from the top; This means the corners of the rad' clear the bonnet (LeMans). I've seen others (most) that are equally spaced and this can mean the corners and bleed pipe contact the bonnet.

Thanks Adithorp, I think if I remember correctly mine are the same as yours, welded on at about 1/3. I ended up with the VW303 rad and fits perfectly just need to sort the pipework now for the lower hose to the pump as it looks a little close to the chassis rail

The bottom hose is close to the chassis. Mine goes staight into a 90' bend. You can just see it in this photo...



I might have a better view but this is the first I came across.

Mine looks to be exactly the same as yours with regards to the bottom needing a 90 degree bend and then going just over the steering rack.

With the Zetec fitted do you know if its best to run the top hose below or above the manifold?

Below as it keeps the water lower, you don't want high up next to the head. The raceline water rail thing is a solution to a problem but is supposed tobe less than ideal. Some thing about the potential for the temp sensor to be in air as the highest part of the system is the rail.
( and theres also the cold shock thing that happens as theres no bypass, most drill a 8mm hole in the stat to allow some flow on warm up)

If you cant stick to the standard thermostat housing i'd got for a Dunnell or retro ford rater rail as these are below. not cheap but effective.

Actually the retro ford one is above i think.

I use a raceline water rail with any issues.
