Zetec Silvertop to Blacktop swap

Postby Fizzer » Tue Aug 04, 2009 4:04 pm

Has anyone swapped a 1.8 silvertop (early escort 130ps xr3i version) with a '99 Mondeo blacktop?

I had heard that I'll need the water pump from my 1.8 as it goes the other way but are there any other problems like height, oil filters, engine mounts, clutch/flywheel (got a lightweight f/w and racing clutch in the 1.8 and would like to keep them)

Also, what about a from legal standpoint? Obviously I need to inform the DVLA and insurance about the new engine number/capacity. Does a newer engine affect the emissions test at MOT time? (officially that is, I'm sure my local 'friendly' MOT center will not be too worried about the emissions... )

TIA

A silvertop waterpump won't fit a black top, so you need to use the black top pump but with an idler pulley so as to drive the pump off the back of the belt so it runs the right way. Various people have done this, so it's perfectly possible.

Haven't heard of any other issues.

Emissions test etc unaffected - they don't care after you're through SVA.

I've got my hands on a 2.0 blacktop. Collecting it was like visiting the set of scrapheap challenge and mad max all rolled into one. At one point I thought me might die as they rammed the doors of their lockup with the forklift truck...

Either way I am now in possesion of a slightly dubious motor. As it's unlikely that I can get an engine hoist for more than a weekend I want to make sure I have the right clutch and flywheel before I start. I have read that the thrust bearing needs to be larger when using a type9 'box.

So can I use the bearing, lightened flywheel and racing clutch from my 1.8 silvertop?
If not the latter two, then perhaps just the thrust bearing from the 1.8 alongside the flywheel and clutch from the 2.0?

Is there anything else I need to considor that might stop me getting the engine in place in one go?

Where are you based ? I have an engine hoist you can borrow if you are anywhere near the West Midlands.

That's a really kind offer - I'm in Oxfordshire but it's only an hour & 1/2 from Brum if you're thereabouts, could you pm me your address?

Cheers
