Zetec-SE is around 80kg I think.
Zetec-E is 120kg or so.AFAIK.

Thats is a big difference.

It would be very helpful if "actual" weights and dimensions could be found for the possible J15 power train options.
Can anyone assist with real info?

Engine weight ( specify dry or wet and what parts are included)

I've got a 1.6 zetec SE without anciliaries and dry and i can lift it, and no way i can lift 81kg's, i'm not that strong.

I can also lift a 1.6 Zetec E bottom end, but that was heavier then the complete zetec SE, so i don't know the bottom end weight of a zetec E, but might give an indication.

Hi Werner -
Any chance you can actually weigh the Zetec SE on a bathroom scale and tell us what parts are not included?
Thanks
Chet

Werner -
Thanks

I'll create a table for everyone if we can get real info.
From the info I've found it looks like the Zetec SE engine is 28k less than the Duratec!

I'm very interested in hearing what engines & trans are actually being installed in the J15.

Please let me know what your J15 builds are using and why you made that choice.

Thanks
Chet

PS. - documented engine / trans weights would also be helpful.

Hi Chet
I am going for the I.6 Sigma with its matching gearbox for a host of reasons most of which are personal preferences
The car was designed for it so i believe it will be perfectly balanced i get more of a kick out of taking a corner at 40mph that i can only take in a "normal car" at 25mph than outright speed (i want to keep my licence).
Watched a fellow racing with a 190bhp Riot (1.6 Sigma) at Cadwell Park dicing lap after lap with a BMW V8 he was buzzing around it all the time but always lost it on the straight (i want to keep my licence but if i had the money i could also up the bhp quite considerably)
Caterham are using this engine for the lower end models thier not daft
My last kitcar was brilliant fun but a real handfull in the wet, its power to wieght ratio was slightly less than the J15 without throttle bodies ie the standard build ECU, exhaust and standard Sigma.
Powertorque had one brand new Sigma left, after recieving crap quotes for used engines that i would completely strip and rebuild ie time and money it was a bargain in comparison.

But saying all this i would love to have an R1 engined Riot in the garage next to the Sigma J15 !

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I'm interested if anyone has got answers to these questions of weight. Has anyone with a Duratec car been weighed and does the extra weight affect the handling compared to the Sigma engine? Plus what sort of performance are you getting with each engine/gearbox combination.

Oh and has anyone mated a 6 speed box from a Fiesta ST to a 1.6 Sigma? The ratios look to give similar top end speeds just require more gearchanges to get there, (the Caterham 6 speed box seems to be liked on their Sigma engined cars.)

I am toying with the idea of building a J15 with a 1.6 Sigma but fitting an Eaton M45 supercharger that I happen to have lying round in the garage. I would probably fit a charge cooler with a second rad up front, running the coolant tubes down each side pod.

The idea is still that at the moment as I have a Westfield XI that I love, but the itchy spanner feeling just won't go away!

The Fiesta ST is a Duratec HE engine rather than a Sigma. A Fiesta Zetec-S would be a Sigma, but as far as I know they were all fitted with the IB5 5-speed box (could be wrong). I don't think the HE and the Sigma are compatible as far as gearboxes go.

I've bought a Sigma to put into my Stylus, so I have a low-mileage IB5 looking for a new home...
