BEC Generator

Postby ozePhoenix » Thu Jun 19, 2014 8:39 am

Think I've managed to fry the stator in the hayabusa :( Just had my friend, who did the electrics in my Phoenix, look at it & tell me the bad news. Thought it would be overloaded somewhat since it's running 3 pumps (high/low pressure fuel + water) & the cooling fan when it comes on. Not to mention the lights etc.
Anyone else with a BEC had this problem?
I believe it's possible to fit a high-output stator, but presently trying to find a supplier in Oz. Unfortunately it's an engine-out scenario to fix anyway.
It's the first sprint for me at the end of this month....guess I could just run it on the battery for the event. Only needs to last about 20km's

Have several batteries and charge them between runs. Car will start to miss-fire pretty quickly if the voltage dips. Make sure you have a booster to start it from and then you should be OK which one other battery to put in (just in case)

Stators get fried because the wiring in them overheats and the insulation breaks down. That could well be caused by the load you're putting on it but could also be a dodgy rectifier (or with some years of R1's justbe prome to it). I was talking to someone with a BUSA engined car at Stoneliegh show and a faulty rectifier was the cause of their stator going.

Thanks for that ;) I have a spare battery which is easy to swap over between runs if I need to, so think I will still go.
Ironically I had just ordered a heavy-duty regulator/rectifier from Ricks Motorsport Electrics in the U.S. as I initially thought that was the problem.
They also do up-rated stators, but unfortunately I have to send my old one there in order for them to re-wind/wire it.
