I met a guy last night Simon at the MK old school Ford meet who'd had similar problems to you regarding buying the trans x then had it fail first time out ---- lots of time and hastle.

At least it's good that Tran-X spares should continue to be available.
I don't really see any significant market concentration. If it's a Type 9 you're after, BGH or http://spcomponents.co.uk/ is the answer.
Up-market, Sadev http://www.swrmotorsport.com/pg_product ... =SCL82-17F and http://www.drenth-gearboxes.com/ seem to offer plenty of options.
I've had Steve (SPComponents) rebuild both of the family's Tran-X boxes -- they came back much improved. But he builds his own synchro boxes now.

I spoke to Steve last week as well and I think I will go to him when I next break my gearbox
