Intercooler in a Phoenix

Postby matt_gsxr » Sun Jan 09, 2011 4:58 pm

Hi there,

One of your Phoenix people must have fitted a turbo- super-charger.

Any clues of where to get an intercooler (air to air) that will fit between the wooden bracing sections of the bonnet? The width is about 25inch, but I only have 24inch 600mm to play with. The narrowest ones I can find are Forge at 640mm that have rear pointing inlet/outlet. That is close, but not close enough.

Otherwise I will have to start cutting new holes, which I would prefer to avoid.

How about a Audi S4 or RS4 intercooler....they use 2, one on each side of the nose of the car so they are pretty small. Only drawback is they are side exit. Didn't Flakmonkey on locostbuilders have a small intercooler in his GTS ?

Thanks Jeff,

Good thought. The packaging isn't so easy as if I had it infront of the radiator then I would need the flow in and out running in the left right direction, which would make it too tall. I could go with 2 and put them at the front of the sidepods, although I'm not sure whether they would fit, what do you think?

Flak Monkey got a custom one made (£700 including a radiator). He is like you, serious budget. Whereas I would prefer to buy the wrong thing cheaply a few times before spending the huge sum.

I was actually thinking of getting one of the S4 B5 side mounts and putting that in front of the Rad. or use something like this

Nice one Jeff.

I think that square one looks good. Actually I found it myself this afternoon after I had posted, only problem, core is a bit small (smaller than width of radiator), and the inlet/outlet are 3inch (2inch is as big as I need), which will make for ugly hoses.

More googling shows up:
MR2 (not quite big enough, not sure I can rotate it)
Celicia 185 (promising)
RX7 (not quite wide enough, but alloy ones cheaply available)
Fiat Ulysses, although no Fiat bits on my car ;-)
maybe Land Rover Td5, or defender (very promising but can't get dimensions)

I'll keep looking.

You will not be running large boost so the core size will be fine. A little bit a Ally welding will sort the outlets or a simple step down. Not much harm in running 3" all the way though (might get a little bit more lag)

I will be running just enough boost to give a fraction more power than you have ;) but not enough to cover up form my inadequacies as a driver.

Looks like the landrover one isn't the best for flow.

Pulsar GTiR looks promising but will have to move the inlet and outlet a little, probably the best solution (like you suggested).

Remember that if you mount the intercooler in front of the Rad, the water temp will be higher. You might need to add an extra fan or duct the Rad/Intercooler. I've spent a lot of money and a lot of time running high power turbo cars and heat management is always the biggest issue.

Good thinking Jeff,

Maybe I need to revisit the Polo Alloy Rad group buy on the locostbuilders site ( http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/3 ... tid=148378 )
