Tyres

Postby jeffw » Mon Apr 04, 2011 7:49 pm

The old question......tyres for sprinting.

I have 205/60 13 rear & 185/60 13 front R888 GG which are brand new. On a trackday after a few laps they are great....on a sprint they are still cold when you come into the paddock again.

So....can I get away with running Soft compound (SG or GGG) on the road and on trackdays as well as sprinting or will they overheat/wear out after 2 miles ? Alternatively are there other tyres which are better than R888?

Good question
I hear blokes raving about the Khumo V70 and they are in 1b I think. I was going to run them as an alrounder to save on having 2 sets of wheels and tires
Mazda Rotary Westy SEIW.Soon to be sporting new body mods(wings etc) and better brakes so I can stop the damn thing

Nooooo.....!

You'll probably have dreadful wear if you do anything enthusiastic on the road on the road at any temperature above 10 degrees.

I don't know about the Toyos, but we did two seasons on Kumho V70As (in K21 compound). Double driven, we had to wait for them to cool down if one of us got a re-run -- and they lasted about 15 events before becoming comprehensively road-illegal. The fast boys now use the recently introduced K11 compound, which is even softer.

The same goes for Avon 1Bs (ACB10 (X-ply) or ZZR (radial)) in A24 compound, which is used by the sprinters.

Sad fact is: any tyre which is soft enough for the competitive end of the sprinting fraternity is unlikely to be worth many road miles :(

So, basically, unless I trailer the car I'm always going to be at a disadvantage on the tyre compounds....

Probably true, I'm afraid -- but engine power, gear and diff ratios, and (of course) driver skill can offset ;)

Fed up now :(

If I could get a set of SG R888s I'd try it, just to see......and a supercharger lol

Presumably tyre warmers are out of the question.

Unfortunately Matt, they are banned for club sprints & hillclimbs

Have you just one set of wheels, Jeff. I'd expect a set of soft tyres will cope OK just driving to and from events and then a second set of medium compound for fun on the road.

I think Jim Giblett has used SG 888's on the road and I think Ian Kelly might have tried them on the front. Could be wrong about both though.

Is the engine living up to expectations? My swap is going to have to wait as other things are taking my time.

I'm looking to acquire another set of wheels but they where going to be for a set of 021Rs....for when it looks inclement. But, as SG R888 are the wet compound, maybe that is the answer.

The engine is OK and is certainly quick just not as powerful as I was told it was going to be. It probable makes 200-210 now and I was sold the head and cams on the basis it would make 240-250.
