Debden Sprint October 2015

Postby David » Mon Oct 05, 2015 9:26 pm

Last sprint of the season -- sunny day at Debden Airfield for the HCAC autumn sprint. This is a "cone" track laid out on the runways and service roads of an airfield, meaning that it is flat and does not (sadly) feature any high speed sweeps -- however, it is a good combination of low speed handling and power requirements.
Four JPSC drivers were present (Jeff, Nigel Fleming, Chris and I). We were pitted against twelve other kit-car drivers, mostly running Caterfields, including Pete Goulding in his very fast Westie VX 2.0, Stephen Laing in his R500, and David and Peter Ratcliff in their R400.

Unfortunately, Jeff's fearsome steed was reluctant to perform to anywhere near its normally blistering capability (possibly a head gasket), so he had a disappointing day and had to pass the mantle of upholding JPSC honour to the rest of us.
Nigel and I had quite a respectable time (top half of the kit-car field), but Chris drove his socks off to end the day only 0.1s adrift of fastest kit Pete Goulding (despite a 60+ bhp power deficit) to finish sixth fastest on the day (only four of the single-seaters beat Pete) and beating all the Caterhams in the process.
Certainly not a bad day overall for the JPSCs.

Chris went on to go 0.9 sec faster in the last run, only 0.1 sec behind Pete. Very well done.

David, is your cage MSA certified?

I certainly don't have a "certificate" Jeff!

And, whilst the cage is fully welded, and the correct height, it is made of 38mm tube.

Could be that our days of sprinting with MSA affiliated clubs are over.

This new regulation is going to affect so many people, you would have thought that if you already had a full cage fitted albeit 38mm then a retrospective standard should let it comply. Jedi is a perfect example as their roll bar does not meet new certification but by my understanding they have a dispentation with the MSA as cars where built before a certain year?

Turns out I 'just' need a new roll-hoop with backstays and a diagonal (K60(i)) rather than the K3/K4 cage. I suspect the backstays maybe an issue.
