Good to see you back Jim.
Interestingly we seem to be collecting a good geographic spread of potential mentors/advisors for those interested in dabbling in motorsport for the first time. Whilst they haven't all explicitly volunteered for the role, all have posted helpful and encouraging advice.
So far, I've noted:
John Manser (JohnEM) -- South-West
Rob Farley (RobMsport) -- Oxford
Jim Spencer (JimSpencer) -- North-West
David Hussey (David) -- East Anglia
Any further "volunteers"?

The volunteer position in my area seems to have been taken!

enjoy

Re: Hillclimb & Sprinting
Thanks for the advice folks. I have now been in touch with a scrutineer and he has put me into the "Modified Limited Production and Modified Specialist production class" - section S12 of the Blue Book. I wondered if anyone else had been put in this class, or if not, which one? The argument was that with six forward gears and no reverse I was excluded from most classes which have a limit of 5 gears. This puts me in the non-roadgoing classes, so 918cc versus the rest! It also means I can use slicks!!!! Never driven on these, so lots to learn. Hope to see some people during the year. Roger

For any interested, the regulations and entry form for the 2010 RAFMSA Speed Challenge are now available on http://rafmotorsports.proboards.com/
(for which you'll need to sign up) under the "motor racing" section.
If you cannot get access to the site, PM me your email address and I'll forward (won't be for a week or so though, I'm off skiing

This is all very interesting and I've decided to put a toe in the water by joining Tunbridge Wells Motor Club (or Sevenoaks & District) and get out to do some Spints in the Phoenix. Anyone know what class a road going Phoenix running 2lt Zetec/Jenveys & Cams would be in ?

Re: Hillclimb & Sprinting
Hi there Jeff,
the class system for sprinting is normally fairly confusing as they vary from region to region. We run a 1600cc striker on 1b tyres and with an areo screen, when we compete in Borough 19 competitions we end up in class c6 and are normally hard to beat as we are up against only road going kit cars up to 1700cc with 1a or 1b tyres but when in wales we are penalised for the aero screen and go in with all prod mods up to 1800cc so we have super light kitcars running on slicks and we get spanked!!
as for you you will probably find yourself in class c7 for a borough 19 event (and there will be a few on your calendar, propbably) so you will have a mixed bag of cars from 1800cc caterhams to 2000cc westfields and all the way up to 4500cc monsters. The majority will run 1b's because the bhp's call for more grip, it is a big class there were 11 out at hethel last year, the top guys are fast but there is a lot of spread.
hope that helped

Re: Hillclimb & Sprinting
Jeff, you are not allowed cross ply's which is a little annoying since we run ACB10's so we are going to have to use an alternative tyre at borough 19 events but all normal 1b's are allowed

Re: Hillclimb & Sprinting
The advantage to running ACB10 is they heat up faster, is that correct ?
Do many people drive down in the kit and then run ? I don't have a trailer so it is difficult...
