Just got a striker!

Postby pekwah1 » Wed Aug 18, 2010 8:43 pm

Hi guys,

haven't really said much on here, in fact this is probably my first post!
I have just acquired a sylva striker today and i'm very excited about it!

You may have seen it on pistonheads, it's a part built project, most of the chassis work has been done, still needs a little bit more and some bodywork doing, and surprise surprise, ALL of the wiring is yet to be done!

Plans are to get the car IVA worthy and get it on the road. Main decision i need to make at the moment is whether to keep the 1300 xflow that's in it at the moment or upgrade it before the wiring commences to a zetec or similar....

Anyway, i'm in Horsham near gatwick. I look forward to bugging you all with the many questions i am likely to have!

Regards,
Andy

Well now we know who got it - well done !

I assume it is a live-axle model ?

Yeh live axle.
not sure what year the chassis was actually manufactured though.
Well i'll probably be stripping it down a bit for the next few days and checking out the assembly so far...

It's got the earlier one piece bonnet, but the later front suspension (without Escort TCAs).
Is there a chassis plate anywhere, or a number stamped in the chassis under the bonnet - Jeremy normally incorporated the year into the chassis number somehow.

Is that a 4 speed gearbox ? That might be a limiting factor if you want to drop a Zetec in.

i'm not too sure about the gearbox, where is reverse usually on the type 9?
as for the chassis number, i think i saw it behind the dash, didn't have a proper look yet though, was too busy taking things off and getting excited!

Congratulations -- this is a purchase you'll have to be seriously unlucky to regret.

Good news -- you have one of the best handling cars out there....

Bad news -- you'll (probably) be disappointed in six months if you keep the engine. There's a thread on this forum started by PeterColl in "Jeremy Philips Cars" entitled "Help me choose a new engine for my Striker" which will start you off. Good hunting ;)

If you're interested, there's a piece of youtubery at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLBEZUdxSak which gives an some idea of how well a Striker with even a good 1600 engine can go.

Oh.........and WELCOME!

Thanks david,

i can assure you i definitely will not regret my purchased.... i've been watchin the petercolls thread... i'm basically on a very limited budget, so i just need to decide what i should do engine wise... I'm going to do some homework to see what else i'll need to upgrade to maybe a zetec/4age/k series and then do the sums.

New Engine: it will be much easier for wiring etc to do it now and have less time not driving it and hopefully will be more than happy with the power
Old Engine: it's already in and won't cost too much to finish, but would be lucky to see 100hp

Well i'm concentrating on the other jobs i can do at the moment until i make my mind up....

I'll be starting a new thread in a minute with some initial questions....

Hi Andy,
First question before you do anything, are you intending to register it for the road. if so you are going to need to pass IVA, so meeting the spec for that must be your first goal. What you do after then is up to you. But having an old pre-cat engine at the outset may help you as the car will get registered with less restrictive emmisions tests. You will probably need a minimum of another £1000 to get through IVA with the test itself and the rest of bits for the build, though you look to have most of the parts.

Switching engine, or at least moving away from a Xflow will require quite a list of parts, a new exhaust manifold, engine mounts , propshaft mods, etc.

going to injection will need new fuel tank and changes to fuel system, ecu's T/B etc...

More than 140 bhp and our gearbox may need an upgrade.

So it may be worth completing a minimalist build for IVA with the current set up, then seeing if you like the car and changing the engine etc once you have had time to put a bit more cash together.

Alternativley you could have a chat with Pete as he looks to be about to take out a 1600 xflow with twin 40's, so that would give you 30bhp more than the 1300, for least cost as it would swap in directly with all the bit's you have would fit.

Paul.

hmmm, the 1600 could be the way forwards...
I know that it would still be good with the ickle 1300 but i am used to cars that propel fairly quickly in a straight line, and although i know it will still feel pretty quick, i also know that i'll probably be disappointed that it's not as quick as it should be.
As i figure, my friend with his 700kg ish elise with 130ish hp is just about quick enough, so if i have the same power in the striker, should be plenty!

So peter, when you're ready to sell.......!
